This was a timely product to appear for us, as we were just about to blast some of our test tanks live rock to remove some small groups of pesky Aiptasia anemones from our test tanks, and were reviewing long term control methodology.
This product was aquired from a local retailer, and once we opened the box, we found a small bottle of JoesJuice and a syringe applicator. JoesJuice is a white milky fluid(similar in color to kalkwasser) and the goal is to feed this juice to unwanted Aiptasia and Majana anemones in the reef aquarium.
We had two places that we selected for treatment, one being a small polyp encrusted piece of live rock, and the second a barren rock wall in our 54g Oceanic Systems corner tank. While the small polyp rock could easily be removed to the Q-Tank for treatment, the rock wall was a structural piece and could not. As it was we treated both pieces in place.
Following the directions, we turned off the tanks powerheads and after drawing a small amount of the JoesJuice fluid into the provided syringe, we attempted to dose the small polyp rock. Here the Aiptasia was nestled in with the poylps, and getting to them was delicate. Ever time the syringe got close enough the Aiptasia would retract into a crevice.
After several attempts to sneak up on the Aiptasia proved unsucessful, I cut a small amount of tiny plastic tube(about 5 inches) and shoved it into the applicator syringe. This gave me a thin applicator "needle" allowing me to slip the medication to the anemone with no further difficulties, and also gave me more of a pinpoint application.
In less than 30 seconds the anemone had shriveled to nothing. I then treated the other Aiptasia on the rock and in less than 5 minutes they were all dead. In their place, however, were the white splotches of the medication, but 24 hours later most of the medication had dissipated and there were no signs of the anemones. We then used it in the 54g Oceanic and acheived the same results.
After 72 hours we had no fatalities, other than the ones we intended, and each of the tanks we tested had a wide variety of fish, shrimp, crabs, snails, anemones, and live coral inhabitants.
This product does what it says, does it quickly, and leaves little, if any, sign of its use other than empty spaces where the Aiptasia used to be.
NOTE: According to the manufacturer, a thin applicator tip (similar to the one we made) is currently in development for future release.
